Twelve nations announce trade restrictions on Israeli settlements

Twelve nations, including Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden, have announced intentions to impose trade restrictions on goods originating from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. The group aims to implement national restrictions or support broader European measures to target products from these settlements, which are considered illegal under international law.

UN rapporteurs characterized the move as a ‘step in the right direction’ but cautioned that it arrived ‘too late.’ In a notable shift, the British government acknowledged that Palestinians in the West Bank are being subjected to ‘ethnic cleansing’ and noted that settlers receive support from the Israeli government. UK measures are expected to address settlement construction, financing, promotion, and trade, as well as individuals providing services related to settlement expansion.

This diplomatic action follows a period of increased violence. Reports indicate that nationalist crimes by radical settlers rose by 63 percent in the first half of 2026. Furthermore, UN data shows that between the start of 2025 and July 2026, 316 Palestinians were killed and over 5,600 were injured by settlers and security forces.
