Israel closes British consulate in Jerusalem following settlement trade sanctions

A coalition of 12 nations, including the United Kingdom, France, and Canada, has announced plans to restrict trade with Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. The group, which also includes Spain, Ireland, and several other European countries, aims to protest settlement expansion and violence against Palestinians, which they state undermines the possibility of a two-state solution.

The UK government, led by Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, intends to implement an import ban on goods produced in these settlements and impose sanctions on companies and individuals providing services to them. Miliband characterized the Israeli occupation of the West Bank as illegal and accused settlers of carrying out ethnic cleansing.

Israel has responded with significant retaliatory measures. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar announced the closure of the British consulate in East Jerusalem and the expulsion of British representatives from the Gaza coordination center. Additionally, Israel has barred 12 British citizens, including several Members of Parliament, from entering the country, accusing them of anti-Israel and antisemitic activities.
