Tweng leads Austrian municipal creditworthiness ranking

The Center for Administrative Research (KDZ) has released its 2026 creditworthiness ranking for Austrian municipalities, based on budget data from 2022 to 2024. The municipality of Tweng in Lungau, Salzburg, secured the top position in Austria.

Salzburg province showed strong performance, with four of the ten best-ranked municipalities located there and 14 appearing in the top 50. Key drivers for these high rankings include significant revenue from local taxes, population growth, and manageable transfer burdens. Salzburg Governor Karoline Edtstadler attributed the results to responsible local financial policies and cooperation between the state and municipalities.

In Styria, Peggau ranked seventh nationally and was noted as the best-performing municipality in its province. Local officials attributed Peggau's stability to strong tourism and a robust corporate presence, including major employers like SSI Schäfer. However, regional leaders expressed concern regarding the overall financial trend in Styria, noting that many municipalities face increasing pressure from social service costs, such as school assistance and nursing care.
