Twisha Sharma death leads to CBI probe after delayed FIR over dowry abuse

Twisha Sharma, a former beauty‑pageant winner and communications professional, died on May 12, 2026, in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. In the weeks before her death she repeatedly sent distress messages to her parents, reporting dowry harassment, forced abortion and physical abuse by her husband, Samarth Singh, and his mother, Giribala Singh.

The FIR lodged by Bhopal police recorded that her last phone call ended abruptly at 9:41 pm on May 12, with a background shout from her husband. The case was registered 48 hours after the death was reported, and the FIR named both Samarth and his mother on charges of dowry harassment, coercive abortion and assault. Samarth remains missing, while Giribala Singh has been released on anticipatory bail.

Following a meeting with the Madhya Pradesh chief minister, the state government has recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the circumstances of Sharma’s death, citing police apathy and the seriousness of the allegations.
