Twisha Sharma murder case: Supreme Court steps in as high court hearing postponed

India's Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the death of 19‑year‑old Twisha Sharma, describing the incident as suspicious and ordering a fully transparent investigation. The court barred media commentary from witnesses and accused parties, and indicated that the Central Bureau of Investigation will be tasked with probing the case.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court, hearing related applications, adjourned a hearing slated for May 26 and postponed further proceedings to May 27. The court considered requests to cancel the bail of Giribala Singh, Sharma’s mother‑in‑law and former judge, and to obtain judicial review of CCTV footage covering the period of 12 – 20 May. The hearing was delayed after Giribala Singh’s counsel sought additional time to respond.

Both courts have emphasized the need for an impartial inquiry, with the Supreme Court also directing the state government to transfer the case for investigation.
