Two arrested for skimming payment data at Venice Santa Lucia train station
Police from the Railway and Postal units in Venice identified and charged two men suspected of installing illegal skimmer devices inside the contactless readers of the Santa Lucia railway station. The devices were designed to capture payment‑card data from travelers using the automated ticket machines.
Technical investigations by the Postal Cyber‑Security Service, the Veneto Cyber‑Security Operations Center and the Railway Police confirmed the presence of the skimmers, which were seized and handed over to the judiciary. Video‑surveillance footage helped locate the suspects, who were later found at a lodging facility before a planned departure from Bologna airport. During the search, authorities also confiscated phones, SIM cards, batteries, cables and other tools used for electronic payment fraud.
