Italy reports surge in police and bank impersonation scams

Italian law enforcement agencies have reported a surge in various fraudulent schemes targeting vulnerable individuals and businesses. A common tactic involves criminals impersonating Carabinieri officers or bank employees to coerce victims into handing over cash, jewelry, or transferring funds to fake “security” accounts.

In several instances, elderly citizens were targeted through phone calls claiming to be from law enforcement or financial institutions. These scams often involve threats of imminent searches or claims of suspicious account activity. Notable cases include an 85-year-old woman in Torregrotta who was robbed after a fake officer entered her home, and a 68-year-old in Sorrento who lost 5,500 euros and gold jewelry to a man posing as a marshal.

Other reported crimes include online investment scams targeting young adults via social media, and sophisticated “Man in the Middle” cyberattacks against companies. In one Veneto-based case, the Polizia Postale successfully recovered 53,215 euros after a business was tricked by a fraudulent commercial email. Authorities continue to urge public vigilance and immediate reporting of suspicious communications to the 112 emergency number.
