Two arrested in theft of $93,000 in MLB memorabilia

Two men have been arrested in Phoenix, Arizona, following the theft of approximately $93,000 worth of memorabilia and personal belongings from a storage unit belonging to former Major League Baseball player Daniel Johnson.

Johnson, who has played for teams including the San Francisco Giants, Houston Astros, Baltimore Orioles, and Cleveland Guardians, was using the storage facility while his home underwent renovations. The suspects, identified as 48-year-old Daniel Jacob Thompson and 30-year-old Michael Charles Hummel, allegedly broke into multiple units on September 27.

The stolen items included baseball apparel, hats, batting gloves, laptops, and purses. Johnson noted that while some items were replaceable, much of the stolen baseball memorabilia was irreplaceable and held sentimental value, as he had intended to donate some of it to charity.

Authorities apprehended the suspects after a pawn shop employee recognized them from police security footage while they were attempting to sell stolen shoes. Police reportedly recovered evidence during a subsequent search of the suspects' residence.
