Two Brazilian homicide incidents result in investigation and 17‑year prison sentence

Johnny Alves de Araújo Andrade was shot dead on July 10, 2026, during the 48th Torneio Leiteiro in Santa Bárbara, Minas Gerais. Police say a dispute with a driver escalated when the driver drew a firearm and pursued the victim. The investigation is being handled by the Minas Gerais Civil Police; no arrests have been reported.

In a separate case, 26‑year‑old Luiz Sperber was stabbed to death while eating at a hot‑dog stand in Águas Mornas, Santa Catarina, on January 5, 2025. A jury convicted the attacker on July 9, 2026, sentencing him to more than 17 years in prison and ordering R$100,000 in compensation to the victim’s family.
