Two Brazilian toddlers die in separate domestic water accidents

A two‑year‑old girl, Ster Eloá Silva dos Santos, died on 27 March after falling into a narrow bucket of water in the backyard of a house in the Nossa Senhora da Apresentação neighborhood of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. She was trapped, unable to free herself, and despite rescue attempts she died at Hospital Santa Catarina.

A one‑year‑old infant died after drowning in a private swimming pool in Tabaporã, Mato Grosso. The child was rescued and rushed to a local hospital, where resuscitation efforts for about 45 minutes were unsuccessful. Police are investigating the incident. Both tragedies underscore the risk that domestic water sources pose to young children, prompting health officials to stress preventive measures such as securing buckets, installing pool fences, and maintaining constant adult supervision.

Authorities advise that “prevenção é fundamental para evitar afogamentos infantis,” urging families to keep water containers empty, use protective barriers around pools, and learn basic CPR techniques.
