Two Cuban twins die during maritime migration to Mexico

Two-year-old twins, Leosdel and Leosniel Oviedo Garrobo, died during a maritime journey from Cuba to Mexico. The children were traveling with their mother, Yusimy Garrobo Leiva, as part of a group of 16 migrants seeking to escape the energy and food crises in Cuba.

The vessel departed from Cuba on August 11 and was located by the Mexican Navy (Semar) near the coast of Progreso, Yucatán, after being adrift for nine days. While the exact cause of death has not been officially confirmed by Mexican authorities, the children's father, Leobel Ricardo Oviedo, reported that the twins likely died from dehydration.

The rescued group consisted of 12 adults and four minors. The mother and other survivors were reunited with family members following the rescue.
