Two dead after workers buried in Anjo construction site accident
A construction accident in Anjo, Aichi Prefecture, resulted in the deaths of a 51-year-old worker and his 23-year-old son. The incident occurred on the afternoon of October 29 at a sewage construction site in Yokoyama-cho.
According to local authorities, three workers were buried by flowing sediment after a 50-year-old man was initially trapped. Two other individuals attempted to rescue him, but a second surge of sediment buried all three. One person managed to escape on their own, while the 23-year-old man was rescued by firefighters and later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Investigators believe the accident may have been caused by a burst water pipe. The site involved installing a connection pipe to discharge wastewater into the sewage system at a depth of approximately 3 meters. Officials noted that the main sewage pipe had not been inspected since its installation 20 years ago, and they are currently investigating whether a pipe failure triggered the collapse.
