Two Democrats join Republicans to pass House procedural package

Two Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives, Jared Golden of Maine and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, voted with Republicans to pass a procedural package with a 210-208 margin.

Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries described the move as a “significant breach of trust,” noting that neither representative informed him or House Whip Katherine Clark of their decision beforehand. The package included a resolution condemning “socialism in all its forms” and contained a clause calling for the passage of the SAVE America Act, a Republican-backed measure aimed at implementing stricter voter registration requirements.

Democratic leadership is currently discussing potential consequences for the two defectors following the unexpected vote.
