Athens doctors detained following death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis FAST-MOVING

Greek authorities have ordered the pretrial detention of doctors Ioanna Gaka and Ilias Theodoropoulos following the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis during a plasmapheresis procedure at their private clinic in Kolonaki. The doctors face charges of manslaughter with potential intent.

Investigations revealed that the clinic, registered as a pathology office, was operating two plasmapheresis machines without proper authorization. Technical reports from the medical device indicated warnings of increased pressure and thrombosis shortly before the patient suffered cardiac arrest. Authorities are also investigating allegations that the doctors attempted to conceal evidence and failed to call emergency services (EKAB) in a timely manner.

The Medical Association of Athens has denied authorizing the installation of such equipment and is under investigation. Meanwhile, EKAB has refuted claims of negligence, stating that responders arrived within five minutes and that the use of a transport chair instead of a stretcher was due to the building's architectural constraints. The doctors intend to appeal their detention.
