German Mechernich military base sees multiple drone overflights

On the night of 6–7 August 2026, the security centre of the Bundeswehr base in Mechernich, North‑Rhine Westphalia, reported two drones flying over the site. A security firm later said six drone overflights were observed between 22:00 and 05:00. The incident was handed to the Euskirchener police, who opened an investigation. The drones are believed to be large Fly‑380 VTOL types, capable of carrying up to 10 kg. The Mechernich installation is the only European maintenance facility for the Patriot surface‑to‑air missile system. Earlier in the week, a drone equipped with explosives and a detonator was found near Ukrainian transport aircraft at Leipzig/Halle airport; the Federal Prosecutor’s Office took over that case. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described both events as possible hybrid attacks and said foreign powers could be involved. Federal security agencies, the military police and the Joint Drone Defence Centre (GDAZ) are now involved in the investigations.
