Two drownings in İzmir coastal towns kill an 80‑year‑old woman and a 22‑year‑old man

On the same day, two separate drowning incidents occurred in İzmir province. The first tragedy unfolded at about 11:00 a.m. on Çeşme’s Ilıca Beach, where 80‑year‑old Nesrin Karacabal entered the water to cool off. Bystanders and Çeşme municipal police (Zabıta) attempted a rescue, and emergency medical teams (112) transported her to Alper Çizgekanat State Hospital, but she died despite all efforts.

Later that evening, around 20:00, a second incident happened at Pamucak Beach near Selçuk. Twenty‑two‑year‑old Mehmet Durmuş, from Karabağlar district, went swimming with friends and disappeared briefly. Witnesses pulled him from the sea and health crews provided on‑site care before taking him by ambulance to Selçuk State Hospital, where he also succumbed to his injuries. Both bodies were sent to the İzmir Forensic Medicine Institute for autopsy.

The incidents prompted immediate local rescues by citizens, municipal officials and emergency services, highlighting concerns over beach safety during warm weather.
