Two Fatal Drownings Reported in Brazil's Piauí and Tocantins States
In the municipality of Jaicós, Piauí, 20‑year‑old Gustavo dos Santos Sousa drowned while attempting to cross the Barragem do Tiririca on 5 May. Police and fire rescue teams recovered his body on 6 May after a search that involved local fishermen and volunteers.
A separate incident occurred near the Lajeado hydroelectric plant in central Tocantins, where 35‑year‑old Leandro Vieira Sousa disappeared while swimming toward rocks about 100 metres from the riverbank on 6 May. Divers from the state fire department located his body at a depth of seven metres on the morning of 7 May, and the case is now under investigation by the Civil Police.
Both deaths were ruled accidental drownings, and the victims' bodies were taken to their respective Institutes of Medical Legal (IML).
