Two fatal road accidents in Rio de Janeiro kill three, injure five
On June 24, a pickup truck overturned off the Joatinga Viaduct in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, plunging into the sea. The vehicle’s occupants, a 45‑year‑old man and his 30‑year‑old partner from Ceará, were trapped underwater and later died, prompting a police investigation into the cause of the fall.
Earlier that morning in Cabuçu, Nova Iguaçu, a backhoe entered the traffic lane on Avenida Abílio Augusto Távora and struck a van. The collision killed a 39‑year‑old man and injured five passengers, who were taken to Hospital Geral de Nova Iguaçu. A motorcyclist was also involved, and local authorities said they would examine safety procedures for heavy‑equipment operation on urban roads.
