Mexican fishermen rescued after five days adrift in Pacific Ocean
Two Mexican fishermen, Daniel Guerrero Martínez and José Luis Portelas Villegas, have been rescued after surviving five days adrift in the Pacific Ocean. The men were found approximately 240 kilometers off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico.
The shipwreck occurred when a large wave struck their vessel, the ‘Camaronera’, during the early morning hours. The suddenness of the event left the men without food, drinking water, or communication equipment. To stay afloat, they emptied a large blue cooler and used it as a makeshift raft.
The Mexican Navy launched a search and rescue operation involving ships and aircraft after a fishing cooperative reported that contact with the men had been lost. The survivors, who suffered from severe dehydration due to intense sun exposure and lack of rain, were airlifted to Puerto Chiapas for medical treatment.
