Two foreign nationals arrested for driving luxury vehicles in Kota Bharu

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) arrested two foreign nationals in Kota Bharu during an enforcement operation known as ‘Ops Luxury’. The detainees include a 36-year-old Rohingya man and a 51-year-old Bangladeshi permanent resident.

The Rohingya man was caught driving a BMW 525 without a driving license, road tax, or insurance. Investigations suggest he purchased the vehicle from a local citizen, though ownership cannot be transferred to a foreign national. The Bangladeshi man was apprehended while driving a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV valued at RM780,000; both vehicles were found to have expired road tax.

JPJ Senior Enforcement Director Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan addressed social media rumors claiming the agency would allow Rohingya individuals to hold driving licenses. He clarified that such a move is legally impossible, as the group is not recognized by any country and their documents are considered invalid for obtaining a license.
