Former FBI officials Nikki Floris and Bradley Benavides face court over Hunter Biden probe allegations

Two former senior FBI officials, Nikki Floris and Bradley Benavides, are facing criminal charges for allegedly making false statements to Congress regarding their knowledge of investigations into Hunter Biden’s laptop. The officials, who previously served on the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force, are accused of downplaying their involvement in efforts to manage the narrative surrounding the laptop's contents during the 2020 election period.

During a federal court hearing in Washington, D.C., U.S. Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui struck an amended criminal complaint from the record. The Justice Department had attempted to add an obstruction of a congressional proceeding charge via a superseding complaint filed overnight, but the judge rejected it because the document was unsigned and lacked a judicial determination of probable cause. Judge Faruqui criticized the Department’s unorthodox approach, questioning why the government deviated from standard charging practices.

Defense attorneys have characterized the prosecution as baseless and politically motivated. They argue the charges represent an abuse of the criminal process. The case remains a significant point of contention, as it involves the actions of a now-disbanded FBI task force and touches upon the sensitive handling of information related to the Biden family during a presidential election cycle.
