Hellenic Air Force pilots killed in F-4 Phantom crash at Tanagra
Two Hellenic Air Force pilots, 40-year-old Ioannis Blesias and 37-year-old Dimitris Petrou, died when their F-4 Phantom aircraft crashed during the Athens Flying Week at Tanagra air base on September 5. The crash occurred in an industrial area between Schimatari and Dilesi, causing debris to strike a factory roof and injuring two migrant workers, who were treated at Chalkida Hospital.
Funerals for the pilots were held on September 10 in Pyrgos and Ioannina. In response to the tragedy, the Greek Parliament is finalizing a process to provide financial support to the pilots' children. Under this program, each child will receive 10,000 euros annually until they reach age 25, provided they are studying. The total financial assistance is expected to reach 170,000 euros.
The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) has formally questioned the Ministry of National Defense regarding the circumstances of the crash. The party is seeking clarification on the legal framework governing the cooperation between the Ministry and the private company organizing the Athens Flying Week, specifically regarding the use of military assets and personnel for a commercial event.
