Two Japanese police officers disciplined for misconduct
The Ehime Prefectural Police announced on October 30 that two officers have been disciplined for separate incidents of misconduct.
A male sergeant was issued a reprimand for engaging in inappropriate behavior with an acquaintance in August. The officer, who is married, reportedly acted on the belief that the woman held romantic feelings for him. While the police department stated the incident was not a criminal matter, it was classified as conduct that damages the credibility of the force.
A female officer received a reprimand for accumulating debts exceeding her ability to pay between October 2021 and July 2024. The department noted the debts involved bank card loans and did not involve illegal lenders or colleagues. The officer is reportedly following a repayment plan.
In a separate incident, the Fukui Prefectural Police referred a male assistant inspector in his 50s to prosecutors for suspected embezzlement of an abandoned bicycle and driving under the influence. The officer, who has since resigned, allegedly stole a bicycle left in a grassy area in Echizen City and operated it while intoxicated after consuming alcohol at several establishments. The Fukui Prefectural Police expressed regret for the incident and pledged to strengthen staff guidance.
