Two kayakers rescued from Wismar Bay after vessel capsizes

Two middle-aged kayakers were rescued from life-threatening conditions in Wismar Bay late Saturday evening after their two-person kayak capsized between the mainland and the island of Poel.

The German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) received reports of the capsized vessel around 9:00 PM near the Hohen Wieschendorf pier. The rescue operation involved multiple boats and a rescue helicopter.

Volunteers from the rescue boat ‘Wolfgang Wiese’ spotted a small light on the sea approximately two kilometers from the coast. The man and woman were found clinging to their kayak, which was mostly submerged. Both individuals were exhausted and severely hypothermic. They were rescued by maritime police and sea rescuers and subsequently received medical care from emergency services upon reaching the harbor.
