Two killed in fire at Gdańsk garden‑plot altane

A fire broke out in a brick‑built garden‑plot altane on Meteorytowa Street in Gdańsk on Saturday night. The blaze, fed by gas cylinders, fully engulfed the structure and forced nearby residents to call the State Fire Service. Four fire crews and an operational officer responded, laying a 100‑metre hose line to reach the interior.

Two victims were found dead in the wreckage – a 61‑year‑old man and a 56‑year‑old woman. Three others were injured: an 18‑year‑old woman and a 56‑year‑old woman suffered burns and smoke inhalation, and an 86‑year‑old woman reported symptoms of a heart attack. The injured were taken to hospital, while police and a prosecutor secured the site for investigation. The incident occurred amid a heat wave that has affected much of Poland.

Authorities are examining the cause of the fire and the presence of gas cylinders, and the investigation will determine any criminal liability.
