Two killed in head‑on crash on Hungary’s Highway 51 near Dunavecse
On July 3 2026, a front‑on collision occurred on the 51 main road at kilometre 69 between Szalkszentmárton and Dunavecse in Hungary. A car from the Dunavecse direction attempted a high‑speed overtaking maneuver in a blind curve and struck an oncoming vehicle travelling from Szalkszentmárton.
Both drivers – a 40‑year‑old warehouse worker and a 55‑year‑old professional driver – died at the scene despite resuscitation attempts. A passenger in the latter vehicle, the driver’s son‑in‑law, suffered life‑threatening injuries and was air‑lifted to a Budapest hospital. Police say the driver of the overtaking car was under the influence of alcohol, prompting a criminal investigation.
Two rescue helicopters, fire crews and local volunteers responded; the road segment was closed while the wreckage was cleared. Authorities are conducting a forensic investigation to determine the precise cause of the crash.
