Two killed in Juaboso mining pit accident

Two individuals died after becoming trapped in a mining pit in the Juaboso District of Ghana's Western North Region. The incident occurred after the men descended into the pit around noon on Saturday, September 26, 2026.

Preliminary reports suggest the victims may have succumbed to overheating and inadequate ventilation underground. After the men failed to return by Sunday morning, a friend entered the pit and discovered them in a weakened state. Local residents organized a rescue operation to transport the men to the Juaboso Government Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

One of the deceased has been identified as Richard Oduro, a local resident known as ‘Churches’. The identity of the second individual, reported to be a stranger to the community, has not yet been established. Official investigations into the exact circumstances and cause of death are ongoing.
