Two men arrested over alleged drone drug-drop at NSW prison
Two men, aged 31 and 38, have been arrested and charged following an alleged attempt to smuggle contraband into the Cooma Correctional Centre in southern New South Wales via drone.
On Friday afternoon, police responded to reports of a drone flying over the prison. Officers located the two men in a nearby park on Barrack Street, where they allegedly found a drone box, controller, mobile phones, and SIM cards. A drone with an attached package was subsequently recovered from a nearby creek.
The package allegedly contained cannabis, tobacco, a mobile phone, and other prohibited items. Both men face charges including operating a drone in prohibited airspace, unlawfully attempting to deliver items to inmates, and supplying cannabis. They were refused bail and are scheduled to appear in local court.
This incident follows several recent attempts to use drones to deliver contraband to correctional facilities across Australia, including recent interceptions at Goulburn Correctional Centre and the Townsville Correctional Complex.
