Two men charged in Bristol racial hate crime investigation

Two men have been charged following a racially aggravated assault that occurred in Bristol last September. Joshua James, 34, and Jake Hutchings, 28, face charges including wounding with intent and racially aggravated assault by causing actual bodily harm.

The incident took place on Sarah Street when the two victims were attempting to move their vehicle. One victim sustained significant injuries that required ongoing medical treatment, while the second victim suffered cuts and bruises. James faces an additional charge for possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.

Following the incident, a referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) regarding the initial police response. The IOPC determined the matter could be investigated locally, and the investigation is currently paused pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings. The organization Stand Against Racism and Inequality (SARI) is providing support to the victims.
