Two men sentenced to 15 years for sexual offences

Two separate sentencing proceedings in Ireland have resulted in 15-year prison terms for men convicted of sexual offences involving minors.

In Donegal, Alan Brennan, 39, was sentenced at the Central Criminal Court for a campaign of rape, sexual assault, and exploitation occurring between 2019 and 2022. The judge noted that Brennan exploited a significant age disparity to groom the victim and demonstrated a remorseless attitude, including making death threats and using images to manipulate the victim. While the judge considered mitigation such as Brennan’s work history and mental health, he noted the probation report showed little insight into the crimes.

In Newry, former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson, 63, was sentenced to 15 years for child sex offences, including rape, committed between 1985 and 2008. The sentence consists of 11 years for offences against one victim and four years for offences against another, to be served consecutively. Due to the timing of the offences, Donaldson qualifies for 50% remission, meaning he will serve half the sentence before being released on licence in 2033, pending a potential appeal.
