Two Mexican entrepreneurs slain in Michoacan and Veracruz as investigations target officials

Luis Ballardo López Corral, a 31‑year‑old restaurateur from Morelia, Michoacan, was found dead on 20 July on a dirt road near Cuanajillo del Toro. The state prosecutor’s office opened a homicide investigation, confirming violent trauma as the cause of death. Ballardo’s family runs the Beer Pong bar chain and other local venues. Earlier online posts had accused him of avoiding child‑support payments.

In Veracruz, the disappearance of 42‑year‑old businessman Héctor Ramos and his 47‑year‑old escort Ignacio López on 14 May led the Federal Attorney’s Office to request the removal of mayor Bertín Bravo’s legislative immunity. Video footage and mobile‑phone records place the victims and the mayor at the same location for several hours, prompting a congressional review of the mayor’s possible involvement in forced disappearance.

Both cases have spurred criminal investigations by state prosecutors and raised concerns about violence against local entrepreneurs and potential abuse of political authority.
