Two-Month-Old Puppy Rescued from Abuse in Quito
On July 23, a man believed to be intoxicated assaulted a two‑month‑old puppy near the Montúfar Mall in Quito's historic centre. Citizens reported the incident, prompting the Plaza del Teatro operational command post to intervene, detain the suspect and secure the animal.
The puppy was taken to the municipal animal‑welfare unit, examined by veterinarians, and placed in the temporary care centre CAVRAT. Veterinary staff will monitor the dog until it reaches four months of age, after which it will be sterilised according to local protocol.
Authorities highlighted Quito's animal‑protection regulations, which allow fines of up to 4,820 USD for severe abuse. The rescue coincided with International Stray‑Dog Day, underscoring ongoing concerns about stray‑animal welfare in the city.
