Berngau: Two killed during routine firearms inspection

Two employees of the Neumarkt district office, aged 45 and 54, were killed during a routine firearms inspection in Berngau on October 8, 2026. The suspect, a 60-year-old man, was a licensed hunter and sport shooter who legally owned ten firearms.

Following the shooting, the suspect barricaded himself in his home for several hours. Special forces eventually arrested the man after wounding him in the leg with gunfire.

In response to the tragedy, the union ver. di has called for a comprehensive review of safety and prevention concepts for public service employees working in the field, emphasizing the need for better risk assessments and protective measures.
