Two people killed in Manhattan subway accident

Two 24-year-old recent Rutgers University graduates, Navam Kaul and Malaika Chitre, were killed by a subway train at the Spring Street station in Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Law enforcement sources report that the longtime friends from New Jersey were seen hugging and kissing on the platform around 3:15 a.m. before the incident. Investigators believe Kaul lost his balance and fell onto the tracks, striking his head, after which Chitre followed him down in an attempt to help. Surveillance footage reportedly shows the pair sitting on the tracks before being struck by an incoming No. 4 train.

While police have investigated whether intoxication contributed to the accident, investigators stated they do not believe the incident was a double-suicide. The victims had recently begun their professional careers following their graduation.
