Two pilots killed in Scone light plane crash

Two pilots, Revel Downing, 58, and William Simons, 63, were killed when their two-seater Aeropup aircraft crashed in a paddock near Scone Aerodrome in New South Wales on Friday, October 16.

The aircraft, a 2012-built kit-built plane on the recreational register, went down shortly after takeoff just before 2:00 p.m. local time. Both men were reportedly experienced recreational pilots from Western Australia who had traveled to New South Wales with the intention of flying the recently purchased aircraft back home.

Emergency services, including the Hunter Valley Police District, firefighters, and paramedics, responded to the scene on Bunnan Road. NSW Police confirmed both occupants died on impact. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) and Recreational Aviation Australia have been notified, and an investigation into potential causes—including weather, mechanical error, or pilot error—is being prepared for the coroner.
