Ábrego police attack: Two officers killed in Norte de Santander
Two police officers were killed in an armed attack in Ábrego, Norte de Santander, on September 25, 2026. The victims, identified as Intendant César Augusto Rodríguez Nieves, 40, and Police Assistant Bryan Stiven Lizarazo Torres, 19, were traveling in an institutional vehicle to conduct community outreach and prevention activities at a local school when they were targeted by gunmen using long-range weapons.
President Abelardo de la Espriella condemned the attack, stating he has ordered the identification and capture of those responsible, vowing to hold them accountable. The president noted that the ELN, specifically the Camilo Torres and Carlos Armando Cacua Guerrero fronts, operates in the region. The Norte de Santander government has offered a reward of up to 50 million pesos for information leading to the capture of the perpetrators.
In a separate security development, the Colombian government announced measures to reinforce security for ten mayors in southern Bolívar and plans to rebuild three police stations destroyed in recent weeks. Minister of the Interior Rodrigo Lara noted that the region faces critical security issues due to illegal gold mining and the presence of armed groups including the ELN, FARC dissidents, and the Clan del Golfo.
