Two sea lions released into the ocean in Florianópolis

Two South American sea lions (Arctocephalus australis) were released back into the ocean at Praia do Moçambique in Florianópolis on July 30 after undergoing rehabilitation. The release gained attention when the two animals, a male and a juvenile female, appeared to touch noses in a greeting before heading in opposite directions.

According to the R3 Animal association, the contact was a natural process of olfactory communication and recognition. Although both animals were treated at the same rehabilitation center, they had been kept in separate enclosures and had no prior contact during their recovery.

The male sea lion was rescued in Balneário Gaivota in a critical state, weighing only 14 kg and suffering from an eye injury. After stabilization by Educamar and subsequent intensive care by R3 Animal, he reached 20 kg before his release. The juvenile female was found in Laguna with a fin fissure; she recovered fully after treatment and was also fitted with individual identification on her flippers to allow for future monitoring.
