Two separate minor rape cases lead to custody sentences in Ondo and Akwa Ibom, Nigeria

In Ondo State, 29‑year‑old farmer Ikumuyi Isreal was arraigned after the death of 11‑year‑old Esther Friday, who died during a sexual assault at his home in Akinfosile Village on 2 February 2021. The suspect claimed the victim suffocated while he attempted to silence her, but prosecutors said he lured her with a promise of N100 and forced intercourse. He was remanded to the Owo Correctional Centre pending further legal advice.

In Akwa Ibom State, Israel Emmanuel Jacob was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 13‑year‑old girl who had been sent by her mother to collect cassava stems. The court heard the victim was ambushed, threatened, and assaulted before Jacob fled the scene and was later arrested. The judge found the evidence sufficient for a life‑sentence.

Both cases highlight ongoing concerns about sexual violence against minors in Nigeria and have resulted in custodial orders for the accused.
