Two Siblings Drown in Muş River, Younger Brother’s Body Recovered After Three Days

In the Kocasu River near the village of Yazbaşı in Muş’s Bulanık district, two brothers aged 8 and 6 fell into the water while unsupervised. The older child, Jiyan Can, was rescued but died despite medical treatment at Bulanık State Hospital. Search teams were promptly deployed, including AFAD, local gendarmerie, UMKE and health services, conducting a large‑scale operation with divers, rafting boats and drones.

The younger brother, Hilvan Can, remained missing as the current carried him downstream. After three days of intensive searching, a drone‑identified surface point led rescuers to the child’s body about three kilometres from the fall site. The corpse was recovered, taken to the morgue for autopsy and an investigation was opened.

The incident prompted a coordinated response from Muş and Erzurum AFAD units, Van police and gendarmerie, and involved roughly 74 personnel. Authorities continue to examine the circumstances of the accident.
