Two teenage sisters, aged 14 and 17, are recovering from injuries after jumping from a third-storey window to escape a house fire in Slí Gheal, Knocknacarra, Galway. The fire occurred on Thursday evening, August 6.
The girls were trapped in their bedroom as the blaze spread. While they survived the fall, they sustained serious injuries and are undergoing spinal surgery at University Hospital Galway. One sister was placed in the high dependency unit following an operation.
During the incident, two neighbors entered the burning building before the fire service arrived and successfully rescued the sisters' three younger siblings, who range in age from four to seven. The family has lost their home and all their belongings in the fire.
Local fire services extinguished the blaze, though it reignited shortly after midnight, requiring a second response. Authorities stated that no foul play is suspected, and inquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
