Two teenagers rescued from hypothermia in the Italian Alps

Two German teenagers, aged 13 and 16, were rescued in the early hours of Saturday morning after being left stranded in the Italian Alps. The brothers had been hiking from Dobbiaco in the South Tyrol province when their parents decided to turn back, allowing the minors to continue the ascent alone.

The teenagers reached the Bonner mountain hut at an altitude of 2,340 metres, only to discover it had already closed for the winter season on 11 October. Lacking suitable clothing for overnight conditions at that altitude, the youths were exposed to freezing temperatures.

During the night, one brother experienced severe nausea and vomiting. Their parents alerted emergency services, and mountain rescue teams found both boys suffering from hypothermia. They were treated and taken to San Candido Hospital, where they were kept under observation before being discharged in good health.
