Two violent crimes in Mossoró, Brazil: ankle‑monitor homicide and rescued kidnapping victim

Mossoró, Brazil, reported two separate violent incidents within two days. On 12 July 2026, Cosme da Silva, a semi‑open detainee wearing an electronic ankle monitor, was shot dead on the Estrada da Raiz, sustaining multiple gunshot wounds to the head. Police and forensic teams secured the scene, but investigation into motive and perpetrators is ongoing. The killing raises the city’s homicide count to 84 for the year.

On 11 July, police rescued a teenage kidnapping victim in the Barrocas neighbourhood after a confrontation in which suspect Cesar Wagner Dantas was killed. The second suspect fled by swimming across the Rio Mossoró. The victim suffered minor bruises, and police recovered a homemade 12‑gauge shotgun. The case is being investigated by the Civil Police.
