Two Young Men Plead Guilty in Tarrytown Lighthouse Arson, Avoid Prison via Restitution

Elvin Ayavaca, 19, of White Plains, and Richard Joseph Barrero, 20, of Harrison, pleaded guilty in Westchester County District Court to felony third‑degree arson and misdemeanor criminal mischief for setting fire to the historic Tarrytown Lighthouse in May 2025. The blaze caused more than $100,000 in damage to the Hudson River landmark. Under their plea agreements, each defendant must pay $50,000 in restitution, complete 150 hours of community service and avoid any arrests. If they comply, the felony plea can be withdrawn after a year and they will be sentenced only to probation on the misdemeanor charge; otherwise they could face up to 15 years in prison. District Attorney Susan Cacace said the restitution sends a clear message that vandalism of community treasures will not be tolerated. Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins noted the lighthouse has been restored and is open to the public again.
