TxDOT releases statewide map of haunted locations

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has released a statewide interactive map featuring a ‘Phantom Layer’ to highlight haunted buildings, cryptid sightings, and other folklore-related locations. Introduced in October to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Statewide Planning map, the feature was developed by data analyst Elaine Wendt to explore historic regional folklore.

In Lubbock, the map identifies the Lubbock Cemetery, the resting place of Buddy Holly, as the city’s primary spooky site. While the current map does not allow for public submissions, TxDOT plans to enable citizens to contribute their own locations to the map starting in 2027.
