Tyana Ancient City Roman Bath excavations resume
Archaeological excavations have resumed at the Roman Bath in the Tyana Ancient City as part of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s ‘Heritage for the Future’ project. Led by Professor Osman Doğanay of Aksaray University, the team aims to identify earlier stages of the bath and uncover connected structures such as a palestra or gymnasium. Findings indicate the bath was built over a Bronze Age layer and was originally constructed by Caracalla in 213 AD.
In the nearby Sarıkaya district, the historic bath—locally known as ‘Kral Kızı’ (The King’s Daughter)—is seeing increased tourism activity. Following projects supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Yozgat Governor’s Office, the Sarıkaya Municipality has taken over the operation of local cafes. New lighting installations now allow visitors to explore the site at night. Efforts are also underway to secure the site’s place on the permanent UNESCO World Heritage List, including plans for a new shopping center to sell local products near the ruins.
