Tycannah rest area upgrades on Newell Highway completed
The $12 million upgrade of the Tycannah rest areas on the Newell Highway in New South Wales was completed on October 9, 2026. The project, jointly funded by the Australian and New South Wales governments, aims to improve safety and amenities for motorists on the major interstate freight route connecting Melbourne and Brisbane.
The upgrades to the northbound and southbound sites include the installation of flushable toilets and new amenities. The sites have been reconfigured and resurfaced, with the northbound area expanded by 150 metres. New features include increased truck parking, dedicated spaces for caravans, and improved separation between heavy and light vehicles through upgraded entry and exit lanes.
Once fully operational, the two rest areas will accommodate up to 30 heavy vehicles. New South Wales Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison noted that the project is intended to combat driver fatigue, which remains a significant factor in regional road accidents.
