A trend toward 1980s-inspired sounds is emerging in hip-hop, highlighted by the recent work of rappers Tyga and Fenix Flexin. The two artists independently developed a similar aesthetic featuring New Wave synths and bright keyboards. Fenix Flexin’s track “Rubberz” reached number 58 on the Billboard Hot 100, while Tyga has been working on a 10-song album titled “$TARFACE” that utilizes a glossy 1980s pop style.

The musical shift has been accompanied by controversy regarding the use of artificial intelligence in production. Tyga confirmed using AI as a tool for specific elements, such as 1980s-style synths and a guitar solo, though he maintained that he wrote the songs and performed all vocals. Fenix Flexin also acknowledged some AI involvement after initial denials, though he stated it was not part of the primary recording process.

This debate over AI usage has impacted critical reception, with Pitchfork issuing one of its lowest ratings in 19 years for Tyga’s album, citing the technology debate as a significant factor.
