A Utah judge has ruled that Tyler James Robinson, 23, will stand trial for the aggravated murder of conservative activist and Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk. The decision follows a preliminary hearing where Judge Tony Graf Jr. determined there was sufficient probable cause to proceed, noting that the prosecution presented overwhelming evidence.

Kirk was fatally shot in the neck on September 10, 2025, during a speaking event at Utah Valley University in Orem. Prosecutors allege the shooting was politically motivated, stemming from Kirk’s stances on LGBTQ+ rights and traditional values. They further argue that the use of a high-powered rifle in a crowd of approximately 3,000 people constitutes an aggravating circumstance, making Robinson eligible for the death penalty.

Evidence presented by the prosecution includes DNA found on the weapon, video footage, and text messages. A key witness, Lance Twiggs, testified that Robinson admitted to the killing and expressed regret. Robinson has entered a not guilty plea to all seven charges, including aggravated murder, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice. The defense has challenged the validity of the DNA evidence and argued that the shooting did not pose a direct threat to other attendees.
