Tyler Soderstrom to undergo season-ending hip surgery

Oakland Athletics outfielder Tyler Soderstrom will undergo season-ending surgery on his left hip this Friday. The 24-year-old has been struggling with a hip impingement since late June, which previously led to a stint on the 10-day injured list.

Soderstrom finished the season with a .245 batting average, 19 home runs, and 56 RBIs over 109 games. Despite the injury, he concluded the campaign on an 11-game hitting streak. The surgery is intended to address the impingement to ensure he is healthy for the next season.

His injury is part of a broader wave of setbacks for the Athletics' core players. Soderstrom joins Brent Rooker (DH) and Shea Langeliers (catcher), who are also out for the season, while first baseman Nick Kurtz is also unlikely to return. Manager Mark Kotsay noted the unprecedented nature of having multiple Opening Day players sidelined simultaneously.
