Diabetes prevalence projected to rise globally and among youth in US

Research to be presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) annual meeting indicates a significant rise in diabetes prevalence globally. Estimates suggest that the number of people living with type 1 diabetes will increase by 29%, rising from 9.4 million in 2025 to 12.1 million by 2049. While high-income countries like the United States and the United Kingdom are expected to see large absolute increases in cases, low-income countries such as Tanzania may see the highest relative growth in new annual cases due to improved survival rates and better access to insulin.

Separately, data from Colorado, USA, highlights a sharp rise in type 2 diabetes among youth. A study by the Colorado School of Public Health found that the incidence of type 2 diabetes in individuals under 20 years old has increased nearly tenfold over the last two decades. In the 10-19 age group, incidence rose from 2.37 cases per 100,000 in 2002 to 22.30 per 100,000 in 2023, with the rate of growth accelerating significantly after 2014.
